Pin-to-Mesh Discharges in Flowing Air — •Rino Morent, Kevin Gernaey, and Christophe Leys — Department of Applied Physics - Faculty of Engineering - Rozier 44 - 9000 Gent - Belgium

In this paper, an alternative to the pin-to-plate electrode concept for gas cleaning by cold plasmas is discussed. Instead of a massive plate, a mesh is used as anode allowing the flow to pass through the electrode.

The influence of electrode polarity, inter-electrode distance and gas flow direction are investigated. Current-voltage characteristics of this kind of discharge are presented and discussed. It is found that the maximum current is sufficiently high to push the discharge in the glow regime that is an efficient medium for the production of radicals and other oxidizing species that participate in the destruction of pollutants in the flow.
