The plasma formation and the expansion of the plasma channel produced by the interaction of intense ultrashort laser pulses (I>1017 W/cm2, 100 fs) with gaseous targets have been studied in a strong external magnetic field (8 T). The diagnostics included optical probing with a delayed frequency doubled pulse as well as optical spectroscopy of the backward and forward scattered laser radiation.

First results of the observations with and without the external magnetic field and a preliminary interpretation of the results will be presented.
