Modulated ECRH power deposition in ASDEX Upgrade — •Fritz Leuterer, Krassimir Kirov, Gregory Pereverzev, Francois Ryter, and ASDEX Upgrade Team — Institu fuer Plasmaphysik, 85748 Garching

In the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak we use modulated localised electron cyclotron heating (ECRH) to generate heat waves for transport studies. In order to understand the underlying physics we solved the linearised heat diffusion equation for a homogeneous plasma, assuming a Gaussian power deposition profile. The solution contains a characteristic time for diffusion which depends on the heat conductivity and on the deposition profile width. In the centre of the deposition the modulated temperature has a phase delay between 45 and 90 degrees w.r.t. the applied heating power. Experimental results are compared with this theory. We find that all characteristic depndencies on modulation frequency, deposition profile width and heat conductivity can be seen and can be used for evaluation.
