To improve the quality and to increase the intensity of radioactive ion beams (RIBs) are the major tasks for any RIB facility. For on-line isotope separator type set-ups, this improvement can either come from the advancement in the target or the ion source technology. Over the years numerous developments and improvements have been made for this purpose equally on the side of the target as well as the ion source. Due to the outstanding properties concerning isobaric and isotopic selectivity of Resonance Ionization Laser Ion source (RILIS), it has by now become a leading technology, applying highly reliable laser systems and delivering intense and rather pure beams of selected radionuclides for a multitude of elements. As a new refined version of this ion source type the laser ion source trap (LIST) has been proposed and a prototype building is underway. Introducing surface ion suppression, this novel ion source combines the advantages of RILIS with ion beam trapping and cooling in a segmented linear quadrupole ion trap. The principle of LIST as well as its present status and future plans will be presented.
