Photoexcited electron spectra of Ne Van-der-Waals clusters taken above the Ne 2s inner valence threshold are shown to display a signal at low kinetic energies that is not present in the Ne monomer. These findings are strong evidence for the existence of an ultrafast nonradiative decay channel for inner valence holes of spatially extended systems, such as Van-der-Waals clusters. This pathway denoted as Interatomic Coulombic Decay (ICD) was recently predicted from Green’s function calculations. Following the initial ionisation an inner valence hole state in a weakly bonded system can undergo ultrafast relaxation due to energy transfer to a neighbouring atom, followed by electron emission from this neighbouring site. In the final state there will be a doubly positive charged species carrying the charges at two atomic sites.
