Dynamics of anion-molecule reactions — •Jochen Mikosch, Dirk Schwalm, Matthias Weidemüller, and Roland Wester — MPI für Kernphysik, Postfach 103980, 69029 Heidelberg

Reactions of negative ions and ion clusters with neutral molecules are important in various environments, from the liquid phase to the Earth’s atmosphere. The presence of negative ions in the interstellar medium is also speculated. Compared to chemical reactions of neutral molecules, the long-range interactions in ion-molecule reactions lead to interesting and different dynamics, such as found in gas-phase SN2-reactions.

To investigate anion-molecule reactions in a controlled experiment, a cold negative ion cluster source and an RF ion trap are currently under construction in our laboratory. With this setup, we will be able to study reaction rates and product ion distributions of anion-molecule reactions in the temperature range of 10 to 300 K. Investigations of reactive scattering in a crossed-beam configuration are planned.
