Momentum vector correlation in 3-body decay of H3 — •Ulrich Galster, Patrick Kaminski, Ulrich Müller, Hanspeter Helm, Alexei Meremianin, Michael Walter, and John Briggs — Physikalisches Institut, Albert-Ludwigs Universität, Freiburg, Germany

Kinematically complete investigations of triatomic hydrogen dissociating into three ground state hydrogen atoms reveal highly structured maps of correlation between the momentum vectors of the three atoms. Well-defined Rydberg states of H3 are prepared via laser-excitation. Non-adiabatic couplings between the Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces initiate three-body dissociation. The fragment momentum vector correlation maps [1] provide a direct view of these couplings, albeit hidden in an inverse problem of relating phase-space density in the correlation map to phase-space density in the molecular state. They are also applicable to predict a reliable cross section for dissociative recombination [2]. We discuss the experimental observations and outline general rules for the analysis of the correlation maps. Research supported by the DFG (SFB 276 TP C13).
