Strong-Field Manipulation of Collective Two-Atom Interaction — •Mihai Macovei and Christoph H. Keitel — Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, University of Freiburg, Hermann-Herder-Str.3, D-79104 Freiburg, Germany

A method is proposed to manipulate the collective interaction of a pair of two multilevel radiators with a possibly intense laser field. The method is based on the fact that the interaction of strong laser driven atoms with the vacuum of the electromagnetic field modes modifies not only the single-atom resonance fluorescence but also the collective parameters describing the mutual interaction between the atoms. Along with the dynamical Stark splitting of the involved energy levels due to the strong atom-field interactions, the dipole-dipole interaction causes an additional splitting of the collective excited quasistates. Since the transitions of the indicated dressed states interact with different parts of the vacuum, we demonstrate in the Born-Markoff and the secular approximations that the collective spontaneous emission rates as well as the collective parameters characterising this system can be drastically modified and controlled by the applied field.
