The objective of the work is to develop a micro-LIBS technique for in situ trace elements analysis in biological samples with high spatial resolution. Since 30 years nanosecond laser induces breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is known as an attractive spectrochemical technique for specific element analysis. The advantages are: no sample preparation is needed, a sample of any phase can be examined, remote measurements are possible, spatial information can be obtained, rapid, simultaneous multi-element analysis is possible. Moreover, from material processing investigations, it is known that femtosecond lasers have effective ablation capabilities, accompanied with minimal collateral damage. We combine femtosecond laser techniques with LIBS. First experimental results demonstrate, that with this method trace elements analysis in biological samples, with extremely high (< 100nm) spatial (longitudinal) resolution is possible. A detailed comparison between fs and ns laser induced plasma shows that for fs-LIBS the same sensitivity limit could be achieved as for the ns-LIBS, even though the fs laser pulse energies are around 3 orders of magnitude less.
