Recent insight in chemistry and transport of halogen oxides at salt lakes (Dead Sea) — •Jutta Zingler1, Mordechai Peleg2, and Ulrich Platt1 — 1Inst. for Environmental Physics, University of Heidelberg — 2Environmental Sciences, Hebrew University, Jerusalem
Since the detection of unexpectedly high mixing ratios of BrO up to 170 ppt in 1997 at the Dead Sea, Israel, the influence of halogen oxides on the tropospheric chemistry outside polar regions is well established. A dependence between halogen oxides and ozone was detected but the complex interaction system could not be clearly answered. It became clear that more precise and extensive measurements were necessary in order to understand the chemical processes in detail.
Here we present an overview over our recent field campaigns performed in summer 2001 and 2002 at the Dead Sea. By using the DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) technique, the qualitative and quantitative occurrance of ClO, BrO and IO was investigated at high time resolution. Furthermore, measurements of meteorology, aerosol concentration and solar radiation were done.
For the first time, vertical profile measurements of BrO will be discussed, as well as the full data set of three measurement sites widely spread along the Dead Sea. Transport phenomena will be a matter of interest as well as their coaction with chemical reactions.
