The MAFF project for the production and acceleration of neutron-rich fission fragments is the main experiment for nuclear physics at the FRM II. In the high thermal neutron flux close to the reactor core (about 1.5*1014 n/cm2s), the isotopes will be generated by neutron induced fission, in highly enriched 235U. A fission rate of 1014/s is expected. The 235U fuel of about 1g, is loaded in a cylindrical graphite matrix, which is placed in a compact in-pile device, which ionizes the fission fragments directly after production to the 1+ state and forms the ion beam for the low energy (30 keV) acceleration stage.

The first ion source type to be used at MAFF, is a surface ionization source. A prototype of this has been constructed, manufactured and tested. Heating filaments, temperature distribution and beam emittance have been investigated. Design details, experimental setups and procedures, simulations of ion beam formation and experimental results will be presented.
