Midrapidity Λ production ratio in Pb+Au collisions at the CERN SPS — •A. Marin — Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung mbH, Darmstadt

The yield of baryons and antibaryons produced in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is interesting because it is sensitive to baryon/antibaryon pair production and to the transport of baryon number. Strangeness production has been predicted to be a signature of the Quark Gluon Plasma formation. Strange baryon/antibaryon production is particularly interesting due to the increased sensitivity to the availability of strange/antistrange quarks in the collision. After upgrade of the CERES experiment with a cylindrical Time Projection Chamber the hadron capabilities as well as the momentum resolution of the spectrometer have been improved. Both Λ and Λ particles can be reconstructed via the invariant mass of their decay products. Particle identification based solely on charge sign is used. Discrimination from target tracks and kinematical cuts are used to enhance the significance of the signal. Results on Λ/Λ production ratio as a function of transverse momentum, centrality and beam energy in the range of 40-158 AGeV will be presented.
