Due to the antiparallel electron spins there is no hyperfine interaction in H2 and D2 molecules, thus it should be possible to conserve the nuclear polarization over substantially longer time periods then for atoms. This offers new possibilities to increase the density of a polarized gas target for storage rings. The aim of the project [1] is to investigate the nuclear polarization of molecules after recombination of polarized atoms under different conditions (type of surface, temperature, magnetic field, different initial hyperfine state). The polarized atoms (H or D) from the polarized Atomic Beam Source recombine into molecules in a T–shaped cell in a strong homogeneous field (up to 1.5 T) provided by a superconducting solenoid magnet. The temperature of the cell can be varied from 30 K up to 300 K. After ionization by electron impact, H2+ or D2+ ions are accelerated and successively dissociated by means of passage through a thin carbon film (5-10 nm). The polarization of the reaction products, H+ or D+ ions, is subsequently analyzed in a Lamb-shift polarimeter.
