Cassini/Huygens at Saturn: Dust measurements before and after orbit Insertion — •Ralf Srama, Nicolas Altobelli, Eberhard Gruen, Sascha Kempf, Harald Krueger, and Georg Moragas-Klostermeyer — MPI Kernphysik, Saupfecheckweg 1, 69117 Heidelberg

In July 2004, seven years after launch, the Cassini/Huygens spacecraft will reach the Saturnian system. The Cosmic-Dust-Analyzer (CDA) onboard Cassini/Huygens is an instrument to determine the micrometeoroid properties like speed (1−100 km s−1), mass (10−15 − 10−9 g), electric charge (1fC - 1pC) and elemental composition. The (CDA) was switched on in 1999 and performed continuous measurements during cruise. The instrument achieved unique measurements of the particles in this time frame. It detected electric charges on dust particles, it discovered and determined the interstellar dust flux inside 1 AU distance from the Sun, and it recorded time-of-flight mass spectra of 10nm Jovian dust stream particles. Now, shortly before Saturn orbit insertion, an overview will be given about the former achievements and upcoming scientific measurements during the four-year orbital tour.
