EOS of dense hydrogen, helium and their mixtures — •Volker Schwarz, Hauke Juranek, and Ronald Redmer — Universität Rostock, Fachbereich Physik, Universitätsplatz 3, 18055 Rostock

We present results for the equation of state (EOS) of dense hydrogen and helium considering dissociation and ionisation processes. In addition, hydrogen-helium mixtures which are relevant for interiors of giant planets like Jupiter and extrasolar planets are also treated.

The self-consistent calculations are performed for the respective density and temperature region known as warm dense matter. The EOS of the neutral component is determined within Fluid Variational Theory (FVT). Effective pair potentials are used there for the interactions between the various components. Ionisation is described within an efficient plasma model. Pressure dissociation of hydrogen molecules as well as pressure ionisation of hydrogen and helium atoms occurs at ultra-high pressures. The EOS results are checked against available shock wave data by means of Hugoniot curves.
