Erosion and surface phenomena of liquid Ga immersed in capacitively coupled RF plasmas — •Jens Ränsch, Suk-Ho Hong, Johannes Berndt, and Jörg Winter — Experimentalphysik II, Ruhr Universität Bochum

One of the most critical problems in designing and running a fusion reactor is the extreme heating of high heat flux components. The use of fluid materials as reaction chamber walls is suggested, but only limited knowledge and experimental data are available. We have investigated erosion and surface phenomena of liquid Ga immersed in capacitively coupled rf Ar plasmas at 13.56 MHz driving frequency with admixtures of H2, N2 and O2 in the range of two percent. We have used OES, SEM, EDX and a CCD video camera as diagnostic techniques.

It is clearly observed that different kinds of layers are built on the surface of the Ga droplet depending on the gas mixtures. Using SEM and EDX we have observed structures and chemical components of the surface layer.

The main erosion mechanism might be the development of micro-bubbles inside the Ga droplet through ion bombardment and the explosive outgasing of these bubbles.
