On the spectroscopic properties of the ν2 band of the methyl radical — •G. D. Stancu1, P. B. Davies2 und J. Röpcke11INP-Greifswald, 17489 Greifswald, Germany — 2Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 1EW, U.K.

The importance of the methyl radical in plasma kinetics, combustion, diamond deposition and semiconductor technologies has been shown in numerous studies. Recently, the presence of the methyl radical in space has been confirmed and a first evaluation shows that it has a higher concentration then models predict. In absorption spectroscopy the key point for quantitative evaluation of the concentration of CH3 is the knowledge of spectroscopic properties such as line strength, transition dipole moment or absorption cross section. In the present work a new measurement of the transition dipole moment of the ν2 band, which lies in the IR at 16.5 µm, has been performed. Information about translational, rotational and vibration temperature are obtained. It was established that in our microwave plasma the population distribution density over rotational levels in the vibronic ground state is in accordance with Boltzmann′s Law. This allows us to calculate the line strengths of different transitions of the ν2 band. A comparison of these values with the theoretical and other experimental data has been made.
