Charge symmetry breaking as a probe for the real part of η–nucleus scattering lengths — •Vadim Baru1, Johann Haidenbauer1, Christoph Hanhart1, and Jouni Niskanen21IKP-Th, FZ Jülich, 52425 Jülicj — 2Department of Physical Sciences, University of Helsinki

On the example of the reactions pd→  3Hπ+/3Heπ0 we demonstrate that one can use the occurrence of charge symmetry breaking as a tool to explore the η–nucleus interaction near the η threshold [1]. Based on indications that the cross section ratio of π+ and π0 production on nuclei deviates from the isotopic value in the vicinity of the η production threshold we argue that a systematic study of this ratio as a function of the energy would allow to pin down the sign of the real part of the η-nucleus scattering length. The knowledge of this sign is important for drawing conclusions about the possible existence of η-nucleus bound states.
