Performance of the Optical Link System used in the MAGIC Telescope to transmit the PMT Analogue Signals — •David Paneque — Max-Planck-Institute fuer Physik, Foehringer Ring 6, D80805 Muenchen

MAGIC is a 17 m diameter Air Cherenkov Telescope located on the Canary Island La Palma. The very fast signals (2-3 ns FWHM) from the PMT camera are transmitted via 162 m long optical fibers to the central data acquisition electronics building, where the signals are digitized. In the transmitter, Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are used to convert the electrical pulses from the PMTs into light pulses. In the receiver we use PIN-diodes to transform the light pulses back into electrical pulses. This system is light-weight and more compact than conventional coaxial cables; it is further immune against electromagnetic noise and has very low pulse dispersion and attenuation. In the conference I will report about design and the performance of the optical link system.
