Photonic Crystals for Telecom Applications and Ultrafast Optics — •Andreas Tünnermann, Markus Augustin, Thomas Schreiber, Jens Limpert, Stefan Nolte, and Ernst-Bernard Kley — Institut für Angewandte Physik, FSU Jena

Over the course of a few years photonic crystal nanostructures have developed into a fast growing field attracting great interest. Especially structures showing high dispersion or photonic crystal cavities with high quality factors can find many applications in modern optics. In this presentation the potential of photonic crystal nanostructures in slab and fiber geometry is discussed. Both types of structures are realized in materials with a low index contrast. A thorough analysis of propagation properties - attenuation, modal structure and dispersion - of photonic crystal fibers and photonic crystal slab waveguides is given. Different application examples, like the use of devices with tailored dispersion for continuum generation or ultrashort pulse compression are given.
