Spontaneous Magnetostriction of Uranium Monosulfid (US) — •Ulrike Nitzsche, Ingo Opahle, Manuel Richter, Klaus Koepernik, and Helmut Eschrig — Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden, P.O.B. 270016, 01171 Dresden, Germany

Uranium sulfid forms in the NaCl-type cubic structure and exhibits ferromagnetic order below Tc = 177 K with a strong magnetic anisotropy [1]. The easy axis of magnetization points along [111]. Due to spin-orbit coupling there is a symmetry reduction taking place below the Curie temperature. We investigate the magnetically induced lattice distortion from cubic to trigonal symmetry and estimate the structure parameters for the ferromagnetic ground state using fully relativistic full-potential local orbital method (RFPLO) in the framework of LSDA.
