The 3-dimensional Riemann-Silberstein vector E+iH in complex premetric electrodynamics — •Friedrich W. Hehl — Univ.zu Köln and Univ.of Missouri-Columbia

In premetric classical electrodynamics, we define the 4-dimensional complex electromagnetic field U=G+i 0 F, with G=(H,D) as excitation, F=(E,B) as field strength, and 0 as vacuum admittance. The Maxwell equations read dU=J, where J is the real electric 4-current. We determine properties of U, such as UU and UU* and discuss in particular how electric/magnetic reciprocity emerges. The covector HiE is the timelike piece and the 2-form D+iB the spacelike piece of U. See G. Kaiser, Yu.N. Obukhov, F.W. Hehl (in preparation). F.W. Hehl and Yu.N.
