Due to the increasingly lower noise emissions of aircraft engines, the field of combustion noise becomes more important in the design process of modern gas turbines. In order to investigate noise sources from complex and reactive turbulent flows, such as in gas turbine combustors, a swirling flow configuration has been investigated by means of an incompressible large eddy simulation (LES) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). As a first step, the isothermal flow case of a movable blocks swirl burner is considered. Here, the main focus lies on the turbulent flow field and its validation through the experimental measurements. Furthermore, the mixing properties of the flow will be described in detail. The flow field as well as the mixing play an important role in the reactive flow case and are therefore of fundamental interest. Due to the highly instationary character of the flow, a time resolving simulation technique is required to capture the effects relevant to the noise sources within the flow field. In a post-processing step, the numerical results obtained by the LES can then be used in CAA simulations to describe the noise emission of the configuration. The coupling to such simulation techniques will be described as well.
