Scaling Properties of Dendrimers — •Ulrich Scheler and Bernd Fritzinger — Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research Dresden, Hohe Str. 6, D-01069 Dresden

A scaling exponent for PAMAM dendrimers with varying terminal groups in methanol is derived from the molar-mass dependence of the hydrodynamic radius. The hydrodynamic radius is calculated from the diffusion coefficient, measured by PFG NMR, using the Stokes-Einstein-equation. The dependence of the hydrodynamic radius from molar mass is compared with a simple geometrical model, a scaling law and a branching model by Kataoka. Values of the scaling exponent are 3.2 for PAMAM-NH2 and PAMAM-OH and 3.8 for PAMAM-COONa. The simple geometric model gives the best fit to the data.
