Reliability issues associated with functional ceramics for industrial applications — •Martin Selten, Volker Knoblauch, and Imke Heeren — Robert Bosch GmbH, Abteilung FV/FLW, Postfach 106050, 70049 Stuttgart

When using functional ceramics in industrial applications, reliability issues are of great importance. Due to the brittle failure of ceramic materials the mechanical behavior is an important topic. With electroceramics another reliability issue comes into play: the potential degradation of electrical and electromechanical properties during application.

In this presentation several aspects of reliability of functional ceramic components are addressed. To be able to avoid quality problems, e.g. in sensors and actuators, it is necessary to draw ones attention to fatigue phenomena in the materials of interest. These phenomena must be studied under field relevant loading conditions to make sure the tested components meet operational demands. For automotive applications some of the typical demands are: high accuracy at varying temperatures (often from -40 to +150C) and throughout lifetime of the component, resistance to mechanical load (e.g. shock, vibration, high pressure) as well as humidity and corrosive atmosphere, high reliability (failure probability under 1ppm) and long lifetime (number of cycles until failure: 1E09 to 1E10). With these boundary conditions during application it is obvious that fatigue of materials must be taken into account whenever one aims for reliable components.
