Magnetic field geometry and topology of 3D reconnection at Sun — •Jörg Büchner — Max-Planck-Institut, für Sonnensystemforschung, Max-Planck-Str.2, 37191 Katlenburg-Lindau

Three-dimensional reconnection is not just an extension of the well known two-dimensional case of Petschek, Vasyliunas et al. Instead, it creates a completely new world of phenomena. So far, it has been even difficult to agree on a general definition of three-dimensional reconnection. We take the point of view that nature itself decides, what is wrong and what is right. Starting with observed solar magnetic fields we reconstruct the most probable geometry of reconnection in the solar atmosphere. Topological features are shown to provide necessary but not sufficient conditions for three-dimensional reconnection. In order to get to a definition we have now formulated an additional (dynamical) criterion. The latter adds another necessary condition for three-dimensional reconnection to take place. Together with the topological condition it leads to a sufficient condition for a class of realistic three-dimensional reconnection. We demonstrate the predictive power of our new approach an make further predictions for extrasolar stellar systems.
