Enhanced performance of a sub-20-fs Ti :sapphire laser by optimised symmetry of the intracavity dispersion compensation — •Simon Rivier, Pancho Tzankov, Ramona Weber, Oliver Steinkellner, and Valentin Petrov — Max-Born-Institut, Max-Born-Str. 2a, 12489 Berlin

A comparison of the power, spectral and noise characteristics of a Kerr-lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire oscillator with zero net intracavity dispersion achieved by chirped mirrors when varying the relative dispersion with respect to the Ti:sapphire crystal location in the cavity was performed. We demonstrate that in the symmetric case a 5-10 percent increase in the output power can be achieved with an improvement of more than 40 percent in the noise performance. The bandwidth and the central wavelength of the output spectrum can be tuned by the dispersion compensation symmetry factor while keeping exceptionally high mode-locking output powers, close to 90 percent of the global maximum cw output power. Hence, sub-20-fs Ti:sapphire oscillators with symmetrical dispersion compensation appear to be optimal seed sources for high-power chirped pulse amplification Ti:sapphire systems.
