Transport of Heavy-Ion Beams in Long Discharge Channel-Transport Properties, Channel Dynamics and Stability — •Stephan Neff1, Renate Knobloch1, Andreas Tauschwitz2, Dieter Hoffmann1,2, and Simon Yu31TU Darmstadt — 2GSI Darmstadt — 3Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Plasma channels created by pulsed discharges offer the possibility to transport high-current heavy-ion beams over long distances, since it neutralizes the space-charge and the current of the beam. In addition, the discharge creates a large azimuthal magnetic field that prevents the beam from spreading. In the experiment at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, 1 m long channels are created in a metallic discharge chamber, which is 60 cm in diameter. To prevent breakdowns to the walls, the discharge is guided by either an laser beam or by using the ion beam to ionize the gas prior to the discharge. Measurements with low -current ion beams (11.4 MeV/u) demonstrated good beam transport properties. These measurements are supplemented by studies of the channel dynamics and stability.
