Sympathetic cooling of highly charged ions in laser-cooled plasmas for precision mass measurements. — •M. Bussmann, U. Schramm, V.S. Kolhinen, J. Szerypo, and D. Habs — LMU München, Department für Physik

We analyze the prospects of sympathetic cooling of highly charged ions in a cold one component plasma (OCP) by computer-simulation. Highly charged ions exiting an EBIS with an energy of about 100 eV are guided into a linear Paul trap. Inside the Paul trap an OCP of singly charged Magnesium ions (24Mg+) is permanently cooled to a few millikelvin using Doppler laser cooling. Each highly charged ion experiences single ion collisions within the cold plasma, thereby losing a part of its kinetic energy. Fast 24Mg+ ions are lost from the trap similar to evaporative cooling while the slower ions interact with the ions in the cloud, heating up the whole ion ensemble. The aim of this cooling scheme is to sympathetically cool highly charged ions to temperatures suitable for efficient injection into a Penning trap, allowing for precise measurements of the ion mass. Using molecular dynamics simulation[1] we examine the feasibility of this novel cooling technique. We give estimates for cooling times and for the stability of the OCP during the cooling process. This project is linked to the MLLTRAP-project[2] for precise mass measurements of medium-mass and heavy neutron-rich isotopes.
