Spatio-temporal diagnostic of coherent structures — •Iulian Teliban, Dietmar Block, and Alexander Piel — IEAP, CAU Kiel, Olshausenstr. 40-60, 24098 Kiel

Coherent structures are believed to play an important role in plasma turbulence, because of their significant contribution to anomalous transport processes across magnetic field lines. Analysis of experimental results and numerical simulations indicate that coherent structures are spatially and temporally well localized, and that they can dominate the turbulent flow, hence it is desired to extract the coherent part out of the incoherent background by using adequate analysis methods. In the past the conditional averaging method was used to achieve this. In the most simple case, conditional averaging is a specific two-probe correlation technique, which has sever limitations with respect to the amplitude, life time and structure size estimations. Recently, advanced 2D probe array techniques started to compete with the method of conditional averaging. Here, we will present a newly developed probe array. The probe array is designed to fully cover a plasma column of 5 cm diameter, and is already tested in the linear magnetized, low β plasma device, KIWI. We will discuss the properties of the new system of probes using simulated data, and show the first experimental results for the drift waves in the KIWI device.
