Vlasov schemes including magnetic fields — •Holger Schmitz and Rainer Grauer — Theoretische Physik I, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, 44780 Bochum

In the past a lot of effort has been put into creating high quality Vlasov integration schemes. These schemes have a global high order to ensure low phase space diffusion. They aim to preserve the positivity of the distribution function and to introduce no new maxima. They are then mostly tested in a one dimensional electrostatic system. The generalization of these schemes to higher dimensions is usually proposed as a simple act of introducing a time splitting method. When a magnetic field is applied a time splitting method however introduces new problems. Although the overall time step still conserves phase space density by Liouville’s theorem, the individual steps introduced by the splitting do not obey this law anymore. This has two effects. Firstly the limiting methods used in the electrostatic schemes may not be applied without modification. Secondly due to intermediate compression and re–expansion of the phase space, the schemes will be more diffusive that in the B=0 case. We present different integration schemes and their generalization to higher dimensions including a magnetic field. The quality of the schemes is compared using simple test models.
