The machine size of a fusion device like ITER is sufficiently large so that line opacity of UV hydrogen Lyman radiation becomes a relevant transport mechanism. A simple 1-D model of the SOL is discussed for which the opacity of resonance lines is included as a free model parameter and the effect on the ionisation-recombination balance and target heat load is studied. The results are compared with more detailed numerical models (i.e. EIRENE) where the radiation transfer process is included in the non LTE neutral particle kinetics. It has already been shown earlier [1] that the global neutral particle density is significantly reduced when the ITER divertor is not assumed as optically thin, for otherwise identical model parameters. The question of Zeeman splitting of the lines and the effect of other broadening mechanisms (i.e. electron and ion Stark effect) on the opacity is discussed. It turns out that the Zeeman splitting and electron Stark broadening is only a minor effect in comparison to Doppler broadening for Lyman opacity considerations.
