Optical Depolarization Through Random Scattering — •D. Voigt, G. Puentes, A. Aiello, and J.P. Woerdman — Huygens Laboratory, Leiden University, The Netherlands (molphys.leidenuniv.nl/qo)

An intriguing universality relation in light scattering was recently predicted. [1] It relates the depolarizing power of a scattering optical medium to its polarization entropy. Using a Mueller-Stokes analyzis, we investigate experimentally both deterministic and stochastic scattering media such as, e.g., multi mode optical fibers and milk, respectively. The data are in excellent agreement with theory, i.e depolarizing power and entropy of the various media are found within the analytical constraints of the universality relation. These results may be particularly relevant in quantum communication, where optical depolarization is synonymous to decoherence.
