Optical spatial solitons in a counterpropagating geometry have recently started to attract wider attention in the scientific community [1,2]. They show significantly different interaction behavior compared to their copropagating counterparts. In particular the counterpropagating geometry offers the possibility of intrinsic feedback. This allows for a new range of phenomena, ranging from non-transient oscillations to spatio-temporal chaos.

In this talk we will present our experimental results of two counterpropagating (2+1)D solitary beams propagating inside a photorefractive SBN crystal. Additionally we investigate the dynamics with regard to their direction. Because the photorefractive effect in SBN is anisotropic, a prefered direction of the dynamics is expected and found. Experimental results are compared with numerical simulations and are found to be in very good agreement. In addition to single soliton interaction we analyze high order solitons as dipole-soliton and dipole-dipole interaction.
