Spectral and correlation properties of vertical-cavity surface- emitting lasers with optical feedback — •M. Sondermann and T. Ackemann — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Corrensstr. 2-4, 48149 Münster, Germany

The spectral properties of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with isotropic optical feedback by a distant reflector are studied experimentally in the low-frequency fluctuation and coherence-collapse regime. The spectra consists of superpositions of frequency combs with a spacing of the external cavity round trip frequency, where the first harmonic might be shifted from the external cavity round trip frequency. In that case a drift phenomenon occurs in the correlation functions. An analogy to the carrier-envelope phase slippage in mode-locked lasers is demonstrated. If both polarization components are excited, combs with an unshifted and a shifted offset have different correlation properties between the two polarization modes. The frequency components belonging to a comb with shifted offset have a high amplitude in the vicinity of the relaxation oscillation frequency.
