Spectral measurements of the snow albedo at Neumayer, Antarctica were performed to investigate its effect on the angular distribution of spectral radiance and luminance. The specific radiation environment in the Arctic and the Antarctic together with the ice-albedo-feedback is a widely discussed topic on climate change (IPCC, 2002). Especially the high reflectivity of the surface (albedo) in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible part of the solar spectrum due to the snow covered surface in Antarctica modifies the radiation field considerably compared to mid-latitudes. For this purpose spectral measurements of irradiance and radiance from 280 to 1050 nm as well as ancillary measurements have been conducted at Neumayer between 11 November 2003 and 24 February 2004.

We found spectral reflectivities of up to 1.00, which significantly alter the angular distribution of spectral radiance. A change of these reflectivities, which happen as a consequence of climate change will have a large impact in the radiation properties in polar regions.
