First numerical description of self-organised patterns in ac gas-discharge — •Lars Stollenwerk1, Shalva Amiranashvili1, Jean-Pierre Boeuf2, and Hans-Georg Purwins11Institut für Angewandte Physik, Corrensstr. 2/4, 48149 Münster — 2CPAT, 118 route de Narbonne, 31 062 Toulouse Cedex, France

In this work a dielectric barrier gas discharge system consisting of a narrow discharge gap between large area electrodes is regarded. We use a classical drift-diffusion model for electrons and one ion species to describe the helium discharge. The model is solved in two and three dimensions. All model parameters and also the boundary conditions reflect realistic experimental conditions. The numerical simulations describe the genesis of periodic patterns during several tenth of breakdowns. In the experimental part of this work the onset of self-organised structures in the corresponding system was observed with a high speed camera. We find a good agreement between experimental and numerical results. This is the first time that a self-organised pattern in a planar ac gas-discharge system can be described theoretically in a quantitative manner.
