Study of potential Backgrounds for Horizontal Neutrino Showers — •Oana Tascau, Karl-Heinz Kampert, Lorenzo Perrone, Simon Robbins, and Christopher Wiebusch — Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Fachbereich C Physik, 42119 Wuppertal

The Pierre Auger Observatory has excellent potential as a high-energy neutrino detector. It combines a 3000 km2 surface array of water Cherenkov tanks and 24 fluorescence telescopes. Both detector systems provide large detection volumes, as necessary for collecting very rare neutrino events.

In order to evaluate the sensitivity to neutrinos, we study the background resulting from showers initiated by proton and iron primaries using the ALiCEnext computer cluster at the University of Wuppertal. We investigate processes which may be responsible for high energy deposits late in the shower development. For this, two shower simulation codes (CORSIKA and CONEX) are used to analyse the profiles of propagating muon, proton and iron particles. Comparisons between different interaction models are shown.
