We analyze the physics of ultra cold neutral atoms subject to non-Abelian gauge fields. Such fields can be generated either by manipulating the hopping rates in optical lattices or by employing degenerated dark states. We pursue the latter possibility and discuss a simple laser arrangement that allows for the observation of non-Abelian effects in atom interferometers. Additionally, we discuss the effects that the non-Abelian character of the gauge fields have in the spectrum of the corresponding Landau levels, showing that the non-Abelian effects can become evident in experiments with fermionic gases, by monitoring the corresponding de-Haas-van-Alphen effect.
