How large is the influence of tropospheric signals on SCIAMACHY limb measurements? — •Andreas Richter, Andreas Heckel, Folkard Wittrock, Alexei Rozanov, and John Phillip Burrows — Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Bremen, Germany

The Scanning Imaging Spectrometer for Atmospheric Cartography (SCIAMACHY) is the first instrument to provide global measurements of stratospheric profiles using UV/visible limb measurements. While these measurements have a large information content and good vertical resolution in the middle and upper stratosphere, the increased importance of Rayleigh scattering, interference by clouds and the effect of multiple scattered photons from the troposphere make interpretation of measurements taken at tangent altitudes in the lower stratosphere and troposphere difficult. This is important for the application of such data to UT/LS studies of NO2, O3 or H2O but also potentially for the use in limb-nadir matching.

In this study, the information content of SCIAMACHY limb measurements on tropospheric signals is analysed for the example of NO2. Particular emphasis is put on the potential of using measurements at different wavelengths. The theoretical predictions are compared with results obtained from Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) analysis of real SCIAMACHY limb measurements and conclusions are drawn on the potential of SCIAMACHY to contribute to current research topics in the UT/LS.
