Azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 realises a distorted diamond chain with a 1/3-magnetisation phase. A combination of time-of-flight spectroscopy and polarized neutron scattering has been used to elucidate the excitation spectrum in the sub-plateau phase. Not only does the excitation spectrum prove the dynamics of the system to be one-dimensional but also reveals a highly unusual interplay of excitations. A lower mode comprises unconventional continua and an upper mode consists of dimer excitations combined with spinons. In addition to the study of the dynamics, we propose a magnetic structure for the ordered phase below T=1.86K.
