Top pair production at next-to-leading order in ATLAS with Powheg — •Christoph Wasicki — DESY, Zeuthen

To compete with the expected precision of the LHC experiments, leading-order Monte Carlo simulations for tt production are not sufficient any more. Improved predictions can be achieved by generating the hard parton interaction at next-to-leading order. An alternative to the well-established MC@NLO program is Powheg, where only the hardest emission is performed at next-to-leading order. It can be interfaced to any pT ordered shower algorithm.

We have validated Powheg for heavy flavour production with respect to tt at the ATLAS experiment. After a short introduction we present validation results on the event generation and truth jet level. The study shows that Powheg is on par with the MC@NLO approach while avoiding several of its deficiencies.
