Study of Linear and Non-linear Ion-acoustic waves in a Double-plasma device — •Farah Aziz, Sebastian Enge, Lars Stollenwerk, and Ulrich Stroth — Institut für Plasmaforschung, Universität Stuttgart

The system under consideration is a double plasma device. This device consists of two plasma regions, the source chamber and a target chamber, housed in a common vacuum chamber. The source and target plasma are separated from each other by a mesh grid. This device has been widely used as a tool to study waves in plasma. For our experiment, FLIPS (Flexible Linear Plasma) serves the purpose of a double plasma device. Wave phenomenon, like linear and non-linear ion acoustic waves, have been studied and presented here. Linear ion-acoustic waves are excited in the above mentioned device, by modulating the separating grid sinusoidally. In order to generate non-linear waves or solitons, the signal in the form of pulses or bursts is applied on the grid. The effects of different plasma parameters, on the linear and non-linear waves are then discussed. Particle-in-cell technique is a useful method to simulate plasma behaviour. In this simulation technique, the motion of a large number of charged particles in their self-consistent electric and magnetic fields is followed. The above mentioned phenomena are simulated, using particle-in-cell technique. The experimental observations and simulations are then presented.
