Spin-Offs of Electric Space Propulsion Technology in Surface Modification Applications — •Davar Feili — I. Physik. Inst. Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen

Plasma based electric space thruster systems are going to become a standard technology for in-space applications. There are much of ongoing and planned ambitious missions, which can be realized only using these systems. As there are different applications and demands on such thrusters, there exist also different types of electric propulsion. Some of these technologies find their way to the earth based applications. The most important application filed is material processing and surface modification. In this context, a series of different types of electric thrusters will be discussed with their in-space functions and also their application in surface modification especially for manufacturing of optical layers.
