BW-eLabs: Virtual and Remote Laboratories — •Klaus Zimmermann — Universität Freiburg, Freiburger Materialforschungszentrum, Stefan-Meier-Straße 21, D-79104 Freiburg i. Br.

In modern science an increasing amount of digital data has to be dealt with. In addition to digitized classical data, like spectra or microscopic pictures, originally computer generated content, like the results of simulations, comprise a wealth of information. To tap these resources an information management approach that exceeds the traditional, paper oriented methods is called for.

The BW-eLabs project is building a distributed infrastructure that facilitates cooperation among scientists from different locations as well as the reuse of primary research data. To enable the sharing of expensive lab equipment remote control functionality is created and integrated with methods for simple exchange of scientific data. Both aims are served by an architecture based on the eSciDoc repository software, that not only provides the storage, but is also central to the user management and the security model.

In this talk we present the BW-eLabs software as applied to the NanoLab at the Freiburg Materials Research Center.
