Investigation and Optimization of a Cryogenic Stopping Cell for the Super-FRS by Simulations — •Marcel Diwisch1, Daniel Schäfer1, Wolfgang Plaß1,2, Peter Dendooven3, Timo Dickel1,2, Hans Geissel1,2, Sivaji Purushothaman2, Manisha Ranjan3, Pascal Reiter1, and Christoph Scheidenberger1,21Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen — 2GSI, Darmstadt — 3KVI, University of Groningen

At the Low-Energy-Branch of the Super-FRS at FAIR, exotic nuclei produced by projectile fragmentation or fission will be slowed down and thermalized in a cryogenic stopping cell and made available to high-precision experiments with ions almost at rest. The cryogenic stopping cell has been designed, built and is currently being tested off-line. Its design has been guided by multi-particle ion trajectory simulations. The interdependencies of different operating parameters have been studied and an optimal set of parameters has been found. Results of the simulations and comparisons to first experimental results will be presented. In addition, a detailed verification of the numerical methods used in the simulations will be presented.
