A parallel 2D multigrid method for GPUs — •Christian Schilling, Denis Eremin, Ralf Peter Brinkmann, and Thomas Mussenbrock — Lehrstuhl für Theoretische Elektrotechnik, Ruhr-Universität Bochum

While Poission's equation in one dimension can be efficiently solved using the TDMA method, finding a solution for two dimensional problems requires significant computational effort. One widely used approach to solve large multidimensional systems is the iterative multigrid method of which many CPU based implementations are available. The method mainly consists of lots of interpolation operations which are intrinsically parrallel and therefore is potentially a good candidate to execute on a GPU. We will show a variant of multigrid that can run on GPUs and is significantly faster than currently available CPU based implementations.
