Measurement of the production cross section for a c-quark jet in association with a W boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC — •Marco Vanadia, Oliver Kortner, and Hubert Kroha — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik, München

The study of the production of a W boson in association with jets in pp collisions is an important test of higher order perturbative QCD predictions. Final states with a W boson associated with a c-quark jet are especially interesting since they are strongly affected by the s-quark parton distribution function (PDF) in the proton providing constraints on it.

A cross section measurement for this process is performed on data collected by the ATLAS experiment at √s=7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb−1. The identification of c-quark jets relies on the reconstruction of muons from semi-leptonic decays of c-hadrons. The measurement and a brief overview of its impact on the s-quark PDF are presented.
