At the LHC a new boson with a mass of ∼125 GeV has been discovered recently in the γγ, ZZ and WW final states. However, in order to answer the question whether it indeed is the Higgs Boson predicted by the Standard Model its couplings to fermions have to be measured. This talk will concentrate on the di-τ final state.

At such a low mass the dominant background is τ pairs coming from Z decays. Since the final state is the same as the one of the Higgs resonance this background is very hard to reduce. For the sensitivity of the analysis it is therefore crucial to understand it in very high detail. In this talk the “Embedding” method is presented as a data-driven way to estimate the Z → ττ background for Higgs searches in CMS. New developments are shown which enhance the accuracy of the method with respect to what is used in the most recent public results.
