Background Estimates in SUSY Searches with Leptonically and Hadronically Decaying Tau LeptonsPhilip Bechtle, Klaus Desch, •Till Nattermann, Steffen Schaepe, and Martin Schultens — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Bonn

Despite lepton universality, the enhanced Yukawa coupling of taus could be a unique probe for the existence of Supersymmetry (SUSY). However, their prompt decay comes along with the experimentally challenging task of tau-lepton reconstruction, aiming at hadronic decays.

The extension of SUSY searches to multi-tau final states, where one tau decays into a light lepton can be shown to be beneficial for background suppression and closes the gap between pure hadronic tau and light lepton searches. Particularly, the less demanding light lepton reconstruction can be used to probe the tau identification performance and hence control backgrounds in the complex experimental environment of the ATLAS detector. The talk covers recent results in the search for tau final states with light leptons with special focus on the design and validation of background estimation techniques.
